The "bench for those who have a home and those who don't:" Stefano Boeri's new project

Stefano Boeri has designed a bench that is meant to be a symbol of inclusion and welcome: in fact, it is equipped with an armrest/headrest and a panel that shelters from sun and rain.

A bench, with social and cultural value, intended to be a symbol of inclusion and welcome: this is the new creation of Stefano Boeri Interiors, the multidisciplinary design and interiors studio founded with Giorgio Donà, presented as part of Rossana Orlandi’s Gentle-Touch of Re-Waste project.

Two meters long, Panchina per chi ha una casa e per chi non ce l’ha (this is the name of the object) is characterized by two armrests with multiple head/armrest functions and a lightweight movable panel mounted on the backrest that, when needed, becomes a useful shelter from the sun or the weather. The seats, on the other hand, thanks to their large size, are capable of transforming into a bed for resting.

“The bench,” says architect Stefano Boeri, “is designed to accommodate the stopping and resting of urban walkers, but also-thanks to the two side rails that become headrests and the movable panel that can act as a shelter from rain (and sun)-as a protected nighttime place for those without a home.”

What defines the bench, Boeri emphasizes, is above all its symbolic value: to be home for the homeless and may find in this object its momentary accommodation in the world. To rest, to rest, to be home are the synonyms of this small object made of wood and iron, which in cities will be able to be of help and comfort and constitute a new way of beautifying the streets and avenues of our urban centers.

The bench was made thanks to the craftsmanship of Mastro Barbanera and the support of Nicoletta Ermacora.
