Genoa, a conference on Anton Maria Maragliano's sculpture techniques at Palazzo Reale

Genoa, a study day entirely devoted to the sculptural techniques of Anton Maria Maragliano. At the Royal Palace, Ballroom.

On Thursday, February 21, a study day entitled The Techniques of Maragliano will be held in the Ballroom of the Royal Palace in Genoa: this is a conference accompanying the exhibition Maragliano 1664-1739. The Spectacle of Wood Sculpture in Genoa(our review here) currently running at the Royal Palace until March 10, 2019. The day of study, curated by Luca Leoncini and Daniele Sanguineti (who are also curators of the exhibition) aims to give an account of the outcomes of the numerous restoration interventions preparatory to the exhibition and made possible thanks to the grants allocated at the time of the call issued by the Compagnia di San Paolo “La grande Scuola di Anton Maria Maragliano,” dedicated to the works of Maragliano and the Maraglianeschi in the area.

The production of polychrome wooden statues by the master and his workshop represented a strong connotation of 18th-century Genoese figurative culture. The major exhibition dedicated to the artist restored the pivotal sequence of the most striking spectacle of wood sculpture in Genoa in the late Baroque period. The statues, before constituting grandiose vehicles of faith for processional rites, are complex mechanisms that show the achievement of refined techniques: from the systems of gluing and assembling the wooden blocks to the tools of workmanship, from the plasterwork to the positioning of the glass eyes to the techniques of decorating fabrics. Thanks to the numerous conservation interventions conducted, it is now possible to reflect on the executive techniques employed in the creation of the Crucifixes, Marian statues and large processional machines carved by Maragliano during his long activity. The initiative was organized under the patronage of the D.I.R.A.A.S. of the University of Genoa. Students’ participation in the study day entitles them to receive one educational credit.
