On the occasion of March 8, International Women's Day, the Pompeii Archaeological Park is offering a special opening of the women's sections of the Pompeii Baths and thematic tours on women's cosmetics and ornaments at the Villa of Poppea in Oplontis.

On the occasion ofMarch 8, International Women’s Day, the Pompeii Archaeological Park is offering a series of initiatives dedicated to the world of women in antiquity. For this day, there will be anextraordinary opening of the women’s sections of the Pompeii Baths and thematic tours on cosmetics and women’s ornaments at the Villa of Poppea in Oplontis, in the Torre Annunziata area. Admission will be free for all women.

The park will give the opportunity to discover a glimpse of the daily life of Pompeian women, or at least a part of it, through a visit to the women’s sections of the public baths of the Forum, the Stabian Baths and the private baths of the Praedia of Julia Felix, a vast urban complex located in the eastern area of the city. The women’s section of the Public Baths of the Forum was returned to the public last year after a long period in which the rooms had been used as storage for archaeological finds. Careful restoration work brought to light the original pictorial decorations, including a splendid decoration with plant and bird motifs on a yellow background.

The rooms reserved for women in the Stabian Baths also display a particular elegance, evident in the stucco decorating the walls and in a graffito depicting a ship in the dressing room, probably a message of love addressed to someone who was sailing.

The small baths of Julia Felix’s Praedia, on the other hand, represent a different case from the public baths. In this case it is an example of a remarkable female entrepreneurial initiative. In fact, Julia Felix, the owner of a large urban villa within the city equipped with a large green space, transformed her residence into a source of income by renting several rooms of the villa, including the thermal facility, which was made accessible to the public from a private structure.

Finally, at the Villa of Poppea in Oplontis, thematic itineraries dedicated to cosmetics and women’s ornaments will be offered. The activities will revolve around the figure of Hypatia, a fifth-century AD scientist, and will be organized free of charge by the Archeoclub of Torre Annunziata, together with the Oplontis Historical Group and the Arev. The itineraries will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
