Sports for Dante: Divine Comedy read in dialects and a comic book for children

On the occasion of the seven hundredth anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, the Italian Culture Sport Association celebrates the Supreme Poet with a major cultural outreach project that aims to highlight the man Dante through the widespread network of its territorial committees and members, with special attention to the very young.

Lectures and workshops, a comic book for children and the Divine Comedy read in the various dialects of Italy: more than twenty initiatives, in presence and radio.

In collaboration with the Italian Network of Popular Culture, the marathon reading of the Divine Comedy in the various dialects of Italy will involve the entire peninsula. The texts will be provided by the Tullio De Mauro Fund to AiCS provincial committees and schools nationwide. Beginning March 25, on Dantedì, every 25th of the month throughout the year until November, when the Festival of Popular Culture will begin in Turin, a column will be broadcast on Tradiradio.org dedicated to the dialects that will arrive at the Fund from every Italian territory. In the cities of Ravenna, Verona, Portico di Romagna, Chitignano, Poppi, Gubbio, and Terra del Sole, AiCS will organize (starting April 17) eight conferences dedicated to the relationship between the city and Dante and the cultural and historical customs and habits of the time in which he lived. The lectures will cover various topics, such as Dante’s death and his tomb; food and cooking in Dante’s time; women’s clothing in Dante’s time and the figure of Beatrice; clergymen and warfare in the Late Middle Ages; Dante in battle (and the Battle of Campaldino); dueling in Dante’s time (with a fencing workshop for children); Dante’s red robe and a costume workshop for children.

A children’s comic book also pays homage to Dante: written and drawn by Francesco D’Onofrio and Raffaele Posulu, it tells the story of Dante’s life and is divided into four key moments: his love for Beatrice, his friendship with other poets of the “dolce stil novo,” the political clash between white and black Guelphs, and his exile far from Florence. Each moment is told through a sentence, in which the authors address the young man or girl reading, and through comic strips. Little ones, at the end of the book, will find comprehension questions about the text and skill games, based on the character and his works.

The project is conceived and promoted by AiCS national direction - Culture Sector, in collaboration with experts in costume history and historical re-enactments; it has the patronage of the National Committee for the celebration of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, the Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria and Veneto regions, and the municipalities of Ravenna, Verona, Portico di Romagna, Chitignano, Poppi, Gubbio, and Terra del Sole.
