The largest ancient art fair goes online. Here's what it will look like and who will be there at TEFAF digital

270 exhibitors, one object for each. This is what the first fully online edition of TEFAF, the world's largest antique art fair, will look like.

The digital edition of Tefaf, the world’s largest ancient art fair, is called TEFAF online. The European Fine Art Foundation has implemented the new platform as a response to the current Covid-19 crisis, and will launch its inaugural fair November 1-4, 2020, with two preview days on October 30 and 31. TEFAF Online will offer itself to the art community as a replacement for the annual Tefaf New York 2020 fair, with an offering that will cover seven thousand years of art historyand the participation of most global exhibitors-a tour de force of more than 270 art dealers that buyers can contact in real time online.

Even in this new version, the fair intends to maintain TEFAF’s tradition of presenting only works of the highest quality: in fact, each participant will exhibit only one piece, the one that best represents his or her expertise as a gallerist. The new format based on individual masterpieces is intended to delineate a new dimension within the digital fair, transforming it into a collection of highlights from each market segment. In this way, the shopping experience offered by the digital fair will seek to evoke the same intensity and inspiration as an in-person visit to a gallery. The platform will provide accompanying images, text and videos to illustrate each exhibitor’s choice. In addition, an interactive component will enable live engagement between collectors and exhibitors. In keeping with TEFAF’s strict standards, each work submitted to TEFAF Online will be reviewed through digital means by TEFAF’s independent evaluation committee.

The organization has already announced that this will be only the first of more editions of TEFAF Online. “At a time when the global art community is experiencing limited mobility due to travel restrictions and social distancing,” said Hidde van Seggelen, President of TEFAF, “we are proud to offer this long-planned alternative that is destined to remain, in the hope of making art more accessible in all its forms through digital innovation. The new platform allows TEFAF’s renowned exhibitors to be just a click away for both established and new collectors, and we would like to make it a permanent feature alongside future TEFAF Fairs.”
