QUO VADIS? To cinema in the heart of Rome, the festival promoted by CSC - Cineteca Nazionale and Colosseum Archaeological Park. The initiative will be scheduled from July 8 to 18, 2025 in the Temple of Venus and Rome with free admission, with access from Colosseum Square starting at 8 p.m. The fourth edition of Quo Vadis? At the cinema in the heart of Rome, through ten Italian films, will tell the delicate relationship between fairy tale and dream, made even more fabulous and dreamlike by the splendid natural setting. In a hypothetical ’cinephilic duel’ Fellini and Pasolini will be compared through the films Il miracolo - directed by Rossellini, where Fellini appears in the unusual guise of an actor - and La ricotta: contemporary fables centered on the themes of the sacred, dreams and hallucination. Fellini, probably the most dreamlike director in all of Italian cinema, and Pasolini, the most extreme and transgressive, will return respectively in two must-see appointments of the festival: the masterpiece 8 ½, which needs no introduction, and Uccellacci e uccellini, a picaresque and fabulous journey of a father and son. If you then wish to enter the realm of the fairy tale, then here is Il racconto dei racconti - Tales of Tales where director Matteo Garrone takes on the fantastic imagery of Giambattista Basile’s 17th-century Lo cunto de li cunti. Dream and fairy tale can also take on the tones of comedy with the very talented Paola Cortellesi in But What the Brain Tells Us. But dreams, as Nanni Moretti teaches us, are not always golden(Sogni d’oro), and fairy tales do not always have a happy ending(Favolacce), although both can be born in a public cabin on the beach in Ostia(Casotto). The dream is also the artist’s ideal place, and Darya Onyshchenko’s film, Malevych, sponsored by the Futura Nostra association, is a symbolic portrait ofUkraine through the prism of artist Kazimir Malevych. If then dream and fairy tale create a timeless melodrama, the spell succeeded through the screening of the beautiful silent film’A Santanotte with musical accompaniment to celebrate 150 years since the birth of a pioneer of cinema, Elvira Notari. The meetings, introduced each evening by filmmakers, actors and actresses, writers, critics and journalists, will be moderated by Caterina Taricano.
Gabriella Buontempo, president of the Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, says, “This review is an invitation to get lost in the beauty of Italian cinema, in a unique place in the world. The choice of films for this edition weaves poetic suggestions and authorial provocations, bringing to the heart of Rome not only great names such as Fellini and Pasolini, but also new visions and new fables. Together with the Colosseum Archaeological Park, the Cineteca Nazionale renews its commitment to make film heritage alive, accessible, and capable of dialoguing with the present in a free, free and shared way. Happy viewing!”
Alfonsina Russo, Director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, explains, “In the heart of eternal Rome, the Temple of Venus and Rome is confirmed as a place of memory, but also a living space, open to experimentation and intercultural dialogue. After music, which enlivened the evenings in June, it is the turn of cinema, arts capable of exploring universal themes through contemporary artistic languages. The festival feeds on the legacy of two masters of 20th century thought and imagination, Federico Fellini and Pier Paolo Pasolini, offering the audience a unique show.”
