At Oxford, Marina Abramović's most radical exhibition. Visitors are given the role of performance artists

Marina Abramović's most radical exhibition project, in which every visitor becomes a performance artist, will be held at Modern Art Oxford. The celebrated artist entrusts precisely the visitor with the main role.

Celebrated performance artist Marina Abramović presents a new site-specific exhibition at Modern Art Oxford from September 24, 2022 to March 5, 2023. Gates and Portals, this is the title of the exhibition, aims to explore transitional states of being and was conceived and developed after a research residency at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford in the summer of 2021.

What is special about this exhibition is that each visitor will be able to participate as an artist in the exhibition project together with a small group of people: they will in fact encounter gates and portals that will invite contemplation of bodily awareness and reflection on the mental dimension. Marina Abramović thus entrusts in this sense a fundamental role to the visitor, who will face the exhibition path by passing through a succession of gates and portals. She conceived this project as her most radical precisely because it entrusts the visitor with the role of the interpreter. In fact, the artist will not be present throughout the exhibition.

“It is an attempt to do something different, because in a normal exhibition you are just a silent witness. At Modern Art Oxford, instead of just looking at the artworks in front of you, you will participate in an experience that will happen to you,” Abramović anticipated.

Due to the very nature of the exhibition, it is mandatory to book your visit online in advance, specifying the exact date and time. There are some necessary instructions for the visit: at the beginning of the experience, one will have to store one’s personal belongings in a locker, then a meeting with cultural mediators specially trained in the Abramović method will follow. The exhibition will require visitors to stand for long periods of time, and magnets and very bright lights are planned.

The exhibition is supported by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
