At Villa Bardini a major exhibition on Galileo Chini, major Italian artist of Art Nouveau taste

Villa Bardini in Florence reopens its exhibition spaces with a major exhibition dedicated to Galileo Chini, Italy's greatest exponent of Art Nouveau, as well as one of Europe's leading Art Nouveau artists.

From December 7, 2021 to April 25, 2022, Villa Bardini in Florence will host the exhibition Galileo Chini and European Symbolism, curated by Fabio Benzi and promoted by Fondazione CR Firenze and Fondazione Parchi Monumentali Bardini e Peyron. With the exhibition dedicated to the leading Italian exponent of ArtNouveau, as well as one of the major European artists ofArt Nouveau, the spaces of the villa are reopened to the public.

More than two hundred pieces including paintings, drawings, illustrations and ceramics will be on display, focusing in particular on the artist’s youthful years; works from the artistic milieu between French and Central European Symbolism, Pre-Raphaelism and Secessions will also be on view: Galileo Chini’s (Florence 1873 - 1956) artistic journey was in fact intertwined with that of artists such as Auguste Rodin, Gustav Klimt, Max Klinger, Ferdinand Hodler, William de Morgan, Aubrey Beardsley, Gaetano Previati, Giovanni Segantini, Odilon Redon, Félix Vallotton, and Pierre Bonnard.

The exhibition will trace the first two decades of Galileo Chini’s career, from his beginnings to World War I, that is, the period when the artist joined International Symbolism. Also on display will be some ceramic masterpieces: from 1896 he was among the first in Italy and Europe to make ceramic artifacts in the modern Art Nouveau taste.

“This exhibition marks the restart of Villa Bardini as a center dedicated to art and culture in Florence,” say Luigi Salvadori, president of Fondazione CR Firenze and Jacopo Speranza, president of Fondazione Parchi Monumentali Bardini e Peyron. “After months of closure, we are delighted that the exhibition halls of the villa will once again come alive with an exhibition dedicated to a great Florentine artist, who was able to distinguish himself on the international scene by drawing on and at the same time contaminating the artistic era in which he established himself.”
