In Bologna, Alberto Garutti's Temporali on display for Arte Fiera

At Arte Fiera, garage BENTIVOGLIO opens 2026 with Garutti's work that transforms a natural phenomenon into an intimate, everyday artistic experience, establishing an invisible link between viewer and distant sky.

Garage BENTIVOGLIO in Bologna opens the artistic year with a new featured project, presenting Temporali by Alberto Garutti (Galbiate, 1948-2023). The work, on view from February 4 to 28, 2026, transforms a distant natural phenomenon into an intimate, everyday artistic experience, establishing an invisible link between the observer and the distant sky. During the days of Arte Fiera, Feb. 4 to 8, the installation will be accessible during extraordinary hours from 12 noon to 11 p.m., and then continue Wednesday through Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m.

“Garutti knows the laws of the world and gives us the gift of it: the work is in fact ’dedicated to those who passing by think of the sky,’ not necessarily the one they are under, but perhaps another, far away,” says curator Davide Trabucco. “Elsewhere is the center of many of the artist’s works, in the awareness that the truth we seek is always one step beyond our center of gravity.”

Temporali is in the tradition of artists since the late 1960s who have expanded the concept of sculpture beyond the physical object, involving landscape, time and waiting. Unlike works such as Walter De Maria’s The Lightning Field, which required pilgrimage to remote places to witness atmospheric phenomena, Garutti intervenes in the existing context. The work integrates into the electrical system of the exhibition space, making it sensitive to weather phenomena. In this configuration, Temporali can manifest itself without viewers or remain invisible, existing in the expectation and possibility of its activation. The viewer mentally constructs his or her own sky, lightning and thunder, relying on imagination. The installation represents a reflection on perception and temporality in contemporary art. Light becomes a visible sign of remote events, while the electrical system of the space is transformed into a sensitive device, capable of establishing a connection between the real and the imaginary. In this sense, Garutti’s project expands the concept of artistic experience, moving it from the simple object to invisible and variable phenomena, in constant relationship with the observer.

Garage BENTIVOGLIO’s programming for 2026 will continue by exploring the connections between the artists in the collection. Later appointments include the Austrian collective Gelitin, known for its diverse use of media and constant irony; Ferruccio Laviani, architect and artistic director of Kartell, with his expertise in lighting design; the dialogue between Salvo and Jonathan Monk, which addresses the theme of quotation and copying in the contemporary; and finally, Angelidakis, Georgiou and Tsaroukis will confront each other in a group show dedicated to Greek artists in the rooms of Palazzo Bentivoglio, investigating the relationship between space, history and creativity.
