Ketty La Rocca stars at the Women's Biennial in Ferrara

Protagonist of the 17th Women's Biennial in Ferrara is artist Ketty La Rocca with an exhibition that reflects on words and gestures.

From April 15 to June 3, 2018, the 17th Women’s Biennial will be held in the Ferrara Pavilion of Contemporary Art: this year’s protagonist will be Ketty La Rocca (La Spezia, 1938 - Florence, 1976) with the exhibition"Ketty La Rocca 80. Gesture, speech and word."

A retrospective curated by Francesca Gallo and Raffaella Perna and realized in collaboration with Michelangelo Vasta ’sKetty La Rocca Archive, which presents the public with a wide selection of works based on the relationship between verbal language and the body, a founding theme of the artist’s poetics.

The exhibition unwinds thematically and chronologically into works on the word, central to the verbovisual phase, and gesture, dominant in later production.
About fifty works selected to represent the artist’s various series: from verbovisual collages to posters, from videotapes to shaped sculptures, from Reductions to Craniologies.

Also on view will be some projects, works and documentary materials never exhibited in Italy, such as the documentation of the action Verbigerazione (1973), made as part of the 10th Quadriennale d’Arte in Rome, and the original audio of the performance Le mie parole, e tu? (1975). A project that was never realized, In principio erat verbum, a play-performance on gestural communication, will also be presented.

Since the 1970s Ketty La Rocca has dedicated herself to reflecting on the female condition, denouncing the process of reification of the female body in contemporary communication. In the same years she also focuses on the language of gestures: through photographs, videos, artist’s books and performances she reflects on her body.

In Reductions she creates, starting from photographs trouvées, images whose outlines are retraced on paper by the artist’s handwriting, which writes nonsense words alternating with the pressing “you,” while in Craniologies she superimposes over X-rays of the skull photographs printed on transparent plates of “encapsulated gestures”-an open hand, a finger, a clenched fist-and the obsessive repetition of the word “you.”

The exhibition, in addition to the support of the Ketty La Rocca Archive, has benefited from loans from the Mart in Rovereto, the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, the Palli Collection, the Frittelli Collection, Teche Rai and the Quadriennale d’Arte in Rome, and is organized by the UDI Women’s Biennial Committee and the Ferrara Galleries of Modern and Contemporary Art.
