Milan, Caravaggio and Rembrandt together in an unprecedented comparison at the Pinacoteca di Brera

From February 5 to 24, 2019, the Pinacoteca di Brera hosts the eighth dialogue, 'Around the Supper at Emmaus. Caravaggio meets Rembrandt'.

From February 5 to February 24, 2019, the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan is hosting a new installment of the Dialogues series, the small exhibitions that offer focuses on masterpieces from the collection. This time the dialogue, the eighth in the series, is titled Around the Supper at Emmaus. Caravaggio Meets Rembrandt, which compares two absolute masterpieces of art history: Caravaggio ’s The Supper in Emmaus (Milan, 1571 - Porto Ercole, 1610), one of the museum’s most significant works (it will, moreover, be the subject of a substantial in-depth study in the first issue of the quarterly print edition of Finestre Sull’Arte: find out more by clicking here) and Rembrandt ’s The Supper of the Pilgrims at Emmaus (Leiden, 1606 - Amsterdam, 1669), an extraordinary painting by the Dutch master from the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris.

The Supper at Emmaus returns to Milan after being shown in the Paris exhibition Caravage à Rome. Amis et ennemis (review here), from the Musée Jacquemart-André from September 21, 2018 to January 28, 2019. The exchange between the two dinners, the result of an agreement between the two institutions, had seen Rembrandt’s painting temporarily take the place of Caravaggio, while now it will be possible to exceptionally admire them together for the first time in room XXVIII in an unprecedented dialogue, the first after the complete renovation of the rooms of the Pinacoteca di Brera. It will thus be a never-before-seen comparison between two paintings of identical inspiration in the executions of two masters of light.
