Through Sept. 21, 2025, the Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection, in Paris, brings the hues of summer inside with clinamen, asound and aquatic installation signed by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot (Nice, 1961) and curated by Emma Lavigne, the Collection’s Director General. The artist transforms the museum’s Rotunda into a multi-sensory work proposed on an unprecedented scale and in keeping with the imposing architecture of the exhibition space.
This immersive installation aims to reconfigure the Rotunda into a dreamlike environment dominated by an 18-meter diameter circular pool filled with water, reflecting the sky through the large dome. On this aquatic surface, white porcelain bowls move pushed by a gentle current, generating harmonious and evocative sounds. The sound vibrations, born spontaneously without the intervention of any performer, constitute the soul of the work: a spontaneous symphony that changes following invisible waves.
The work fits into an artistic vein in which sound becomes living matter, freed from the structures of conventional music, and actively involves the audience, inviting them to be part of the experience. The title clinamen, taken from Epicurean physics, refers to the random trajectory of atoms in motion-an idea reflected in the unpredictable and changing nature of the work. Each moment spent here thus becomes unique, as it offers a sensory and temporal experience that is constantly renewed.
Boursier-Mougenot invites the visitor to confront the vastness of the present moment, where time seems to be suspended. The work explores the boundary between the everyday and art, transforming common objects such as bowls into refined instruments capable of producing sounds autonomously, without human intervention.
La Bourse de Commerce becomes a place to lose oneself in listening and contemplation, where each visitor can rediscover his or her relationship with time and listening. With clinamen, the artist brings to life a subtle dialogue between matter, architectural space and human presence to offer both an individual and collective experience.
Céleste Boursier-Mougenot represented France at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, and her work, which has been presented for nearly 30 years in contemporary art spaces in France and other countries, should be considered primarily as that of a musician. After being, from 1985 to 1994, a composer for the company Side One - Posthume Théâtre, led by author and director Pascal Rambert, Boursier-Mougenot wanted to give autonomous form to her music through the creation of installations. Each place where one of his works is installed fosters a listening experience that, delivered to the visitor’s gaze and understanding, reveals the process that generates the music.
