Renato Guttuso stars in an exhibition at the Varese Civic Museums

From May 19, 2019 to January 6, 2020, the Varese Civic Museums are hosting the exhibition 'Renato Guttuso in Varese.

It opened on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at the Musei Civici di Villa Mirabello Renato Guttuso in Varese, the exhibition, curated by Serena Contini, celebrating Renato Guttuso (Bagheria, 1911 - Rome, 1987) who was one of the most interesting artists and intellectuals of the Italian twentieth century. Twenty-five paintings are presented for the first time in Varese in the rooms of the 18th-century villa overlooking the Estensi Gardens, in a thematic itinerary that will allow the works belonging to the Pellin collection to be highlighted. These include the famous painting Spes contra spem, Guttuso’s signature work, which represents the absolute value of memory for the artist and his spiritual legacy. One of the last masterpieces that the Bagheria master considered a kind of testament.

The exhibition was made possible thanks to a collaboration with the Pellin Foundation: twenty-one works are the Foundation’s assets, and the subject of a loan agreement with the City of Varese, and four others are on loan. The exhibition is organized under the patronage of: European Commission, Lombardy Region, Province of Varese, University of Insubria and Guttuso Archives. Also important is the collaboration with theGiovanni Testori Association and the FAI. Thanks to the latter it will be possible to visit the Sean Scully - Long Light exhibitions, on display at Villa Panza, and the Guttuso exhibition at Villa Mirabello, with a special promotion.
