The city of Cuneo is preparing to host a selection of works from the Galleria Borghese on the move from November 22, 2025 to March 29, 2026. The Monumental Complex of San Francesco will host the exhibition The Borghese Gallery. From Raphael to Bernini. History of a Collection, curated by Francesca Cappelletti and Ettore Giovanati, realized thanks to the collaboration between Fondazione CRC and Intesa Sanpaolo and with the organizational support of MondoMostre.
The initiative is part of a cycle of exhibitions inaugurated in 2022 and already consolidated with successes such as The Colors of Faith in Venice: Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese (2022), Lorenzo Lotto and Pellegrino Tibaldi. Masterpieces from the Holy House of Loreto (2023) and Canaletto, van Wittel, Bellotto. The Grand Theater of Cities (2024). The review aims to confirm Fondazione CRC’s commitment to promoting the Cuneo area as a center of artistic production and enjoyment and that of Intesa Sanpaolo, through Progetto Cultura, in the enhancement of art and culture in the country.
The exhibition aims to offer an overview of the collecting parabola of Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese (1577-1633), a leading figure in seventeenth-century Rome and a protagonist of the Baroque art scene. A tireless patron and collector, Borghese developed a model of collecting based on quality and aesthetic consistency, reconciling personal taste and family prestige. Grandson of Pope Paul V, the cardinal supported major architectural feats, including the transformation of Villa Borghese into a museum designed to preserve and enhance his collection. His collection, assembled with sometimes daring methods, included works ranging from classical antiquities to Renaissance masters to the most advanced Baroque art.
The works on display, which came directly from the Galleria Borghese, include masterpieces by Titian, Jacopo Bassano , and Guido Reni. The exhibition aims to illustrate the artistic choices of the cardinal and his descendants, highlighting Borghese’s ability to guide artistic taste and collect significant representations of the different Italian schools of painting. The variety and consistency of the collection offer a complete picture of the evolution of collecting and the role of patronage in seventeenth-century art. The exhibition layout was designed specifically for the former church of San Francesco and reuses the structures used in previous exhibitions, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of the cultural events promoted. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog published by Allemandi, with scientific contributions edited by Ettore Giovanati, with the participation of Lucia Calzona and Antonio Iommelli.
As in previous editions, the exhibition will be flanked by a program of collateral initiatives aimed at the public of all ages. Lectures and moments of in-depth study, guided tours, workshops for schools of all levels, activities dedicated to families and educational paths for children are planned. To enable independent enjoyment of the exhibition, free audio guides will be available in Italian and English, with differentiated routes for adults and children. In addition, with a view to ensuring cultural accessibility, content will be supported by audio-visual materials and integrated in LIS language. The press conference to present the exhibition will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at the Gallerie d’Italia in Milan’s Piazza della Scala, with entrance from Via Manzoni 10. The press preview will take place on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025 at 11:30 a.m., while the inauguration open to the public is scheduled for the same day at 5:30 p.m. in Cuneo, in the Complesso Monumentale di San Francesco.
