The Egyptian Museum of Turin and the Vallette Prison collaborate: here is the exhibition with reproductions made by inmates

Through Jan. 21, 2019, the Egyptian Museum in Turin is showcasing reproductions of Egyptian works made by inmates of the Vallette Prison.

The project Free to Learn has been launched in Turin. Ancient Egypt in the Turin Prison, a collaboration between the Egyptian Museum and the Lorusso Cotugno Prison. The project, which is part of the initiative The Museum Outside the Museum, consists of the exhibition of faithful reproductions of Egyptian artifacts such as papyri, vases and grave goods from the tomb of the architect Kha and his wife Merit made by some of the inmates of the Lorusso Cotugno prison as part of the educational courses held within the walls of the Vallette Prison, the first event of which was held on Friday, March 16, with Enrico Ferraris, curator of the Egyptian Museum.

Monica Cristina Gallo, Garante dei detenuti, said, “There is a prison with people who have done wrong, but who need to get back in touch with the city.” Christian Greco, director of the Egyptian Museum, commented, “Today a dream is crowned and I am the one to thank everyone. Prison is seen as a place of segregation, while the museum is usually considered an ivory tower for a select few, but it is not a suspended society. In this case, the museum acted as a bridge between institutions.” Evelina Christillin, president of the museum, added, “This is how we continue what we have been doing for a few years, that is, making the museum live outside. Our integration policy concerns everyone in general, we work with anyone who wants to build bridges and not barriers.”

The works can be admired until January 21, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and free admission by entering the Egyptian Museum from the entrance at Via Maria Vittoria 3.
