The world's greatest artists grappling with the pandemic. An exhibition in New York

From Maurizio Cattelan to William Kentridge, the world's greatest artists address the Covid pandemic in their drawings. An exhibition in New York.

Some of the greatest contemporary artists on the world stage grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic. That’s the point of the exhibition 100 Drawings from Now, which runs from Oct. 7, 2020 to Jan. 17, 2021, at The Drawing Center in New York: a project that brings together 100 drawings made by leading artists during the months of the coronavirus. Among the names featured are Michael Armitage, Ed Atkins, Rina Banerjee, Maurizio Cattelan, Francesco Clemente, Torkwase Dyson, William Kentridge, Annette Messager, Giuseppe Penone, Raymond Pettibon, Mika Rottenberg, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.

The aim of the exhibition is to take a look at the artistic production of a very difficult period that produced a health crisis and an economic crisis, but also marked the rebirth of a certain kind of activism, especially in the United States, intent on fixing the problems arising from systemic racism and social injustice. The works thus underscore the urgency, intimacy and universality of the language of drawing during the moments of isolation and upheaval of recent weeks.

The exhibition, curated by Claire Gilman, grew out of an idea that took shape back in April and that Gilman developed with colleagues Rosario Güiraldes and Isabella Kapur and Drawing Center director Laura Hoptman. The themes the exhibition addresses are diverse, according to the sensibilities of the authors: domestic space, intimacy, loneliness, illness, violence, and technology. All the works in the exhibition have been donated to the Drawing Center, which will offer them for sale on Oct. 4 in order to raise funds for the museum.
