Tina Modotti's eros of revolution at Rome's Palazzo Merulana

As part of Rome Photography 2020 Eros, Palazzo Merulana is hosting until March 8 the exhibition Tina Modotti. The Eros of Revolution.

On the occasion of Roma Fotografia 2020 EROS, Palazzo Merulana is hosting until March 8, 2020 the exhibition Tina Modotti. The Eros of Revolution, curated by Maria Cristina Valeri and Alex Mezzenga.

The exhibition features 38 works from the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (IIE), the Fondo “Manuel Toussaint” of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City and from the National Photo Library Collection of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) in the City of Pachuca Hidalgo in Mexico: iconic images by Tina Modotti (Udine, 1896 - Mexico City, 1942) that led her to be considered the most influential photographer of the early 20th century. In her shots she extraordinarily recounted the complexity of a revolution without ever losing the delicacy of paying attention to a detail, a detail.

The impetus for this is certainly desire, passion, will, the exploration of self and life itself.

Tailor, bureaucrat, actress, activist, polyglot, lover, spy: this is how Tina Modotti was variously defined; much has been written about her life, characterized by strong emancipation and powerful femininity, but little is known about her work as a photographer.

“Whenever they use the word ’art’ or ’artist’ in connection with my photographic work, I feel an unpleasant sensation due to the misuse of such terms,” she had stated. “In recent years there has been much discussion as to whether or not photography can be considered an artistic work, but we, who use the camera as a pure tool of the trade, just as a painter uses his brushes, do not care about contrary opinions, because we enjoy the approval of those who recognize photography’s multiple functions, and recognize it as the most eloquent and direct means of fixing and recording the present age. Therefore, it is not essential to know whether photography is or is not an art; what is important is to distinguish between good and bad photography.”
