The Angels: TOMOKO NAGAO Art Exhibition, curated by FunDesign.tv, is on view through Aug. 31 on the third floor of the SKM Diamond Tower in Taipei , Taiwan. The exhibition presents a selection of works and an unprecedented series of sculptures inspired by the figure of the angel, conceived by Japanese artist Tomoko Nagao. Central to the project is the newAngelSeries: eight limited edition sculptures that symbolically interpret the phenomena and cycles of nature, combining the author’s aesthetic poetics with a visual imagery rooted in the language of Kawaiicontemporary. For the first time, four hand-drawn, limited-edition angel sculptures are presented to the public, each carrying a well-defined symbolic universe. The works titled Sunshine, Raining Drop, Emerald Sea and Moon evoke atmospheric and celestial elements, while Forest, Pink Flower, Yellow Leaf and Rose refer to plant ecosystems and organic fragilities. All subjects are declined in a print run of ten hand-numbered examples.
The sculptural approach adopted by Nagao goes beyond mere ornamental function: the angels, with their rounded forms and shiny surfaces, become visual interpreters of the many nuances of nature. Each sculpture not only represents a figurative entity, but embodies a specific aspect of the natural environment, giving tangible form to its rhythms and emotional variations. In this sense, Angels marks an important stage in the poetic and formal evolution of the artist, who moves away from large-scale narrative compositions to focus on more intimate and reflective elements, where the natural microcosm becomes the absolute protagonist. Through the use of polyresin and spray painting techniques with lacquer, the angels take on different visual characteristics depending on the light, reflecting iridescent glows and changing their appearance slightly throughout the day. The dynamic quality of the surfaces restores vitality to the works, accentuating the link between form and sensation, matter and light.
Tomoko Nagao, known for her reinterpretations of Renaissance icons in a pop and Kawaii key, here adopts a more lyrical but no less recognizable register. Her angels appear as discreet presences, capable of evoking protection, connection and spiritual guidance in the everyday. The sculpture thus becomes a point of contact between classical art and contemporary urban imagery, between sacredness and design. The artist’s intent is to bring art back into lived space, transforming it into an accessible, empathetic element integrated into everyday life.
In addition to sculpture, the exhibition also includes a new series of oil paintings and merchandise items inspired by the Angel Series, such as washi tape and other collectible design items. The intent is to broaden the scope of the art project by offering the public an opportunity to take a fragment of the symbolic universe of angels with them. Other derivative products are currently under development, reflecting the artist’s desire to build a narrative ecosystem that extends beyond the confines of the exhibition.
