Velvets and embroideries between Gothic and Renaissance on display at the Buonconsiglio Castle

At the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trent, the exhibition Fili d' oro e dipinti di seta. Velvets and Embroideries between Gothic and Renaissance.

Golden threads and silk paintings. Velvets and Embroidery between Gothic and Renaissance is the exhibition that will run from July 13 to November 3, 2019 at the Buonconsiglio Castle in Trent.

Through velvet copes, gold and ’silver chasubles, rare dalmatics with embroidery in multicolored silk threads, precious Florentine and Venetian fabrics with multiple ornaments and some important sacred paintings, the history of sacred textiles, textile artifacts made between the second half of the 15th century and the first decades of the 16th century in Italy and Northern Europe will be told.

These include velvet masterpieces with rich silk and gold embroidery, the very precious vestment of Pope Nicholas V from the Bargello Museum, commissioned in 1450 by the city of Siena and given to the pontiff on the occasion of the canonization of St. Bernardine. Also the cope hood from Milan’s Castello Sforzesco, specially restored and decorated with embroidery for whose preparatory design Botticelli was named.

These luxurious embroidered textiles can still be found in areas throughout the Alps: created for religious and secular commissions, they have been preserved thanks to the church and the passion of many collectors. A production of works considered valuable for understanding the high level reached by the workshops of Italian weavers and embroiderers.

About forty sacred vestments and a selection of panel paintings illustrating their functions and fashions will be on display.
