Venice: Tiepolo's canvases return to Ca' Dolfin... in a virtual version

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary ofCa’ Foscari University of Venice, an experiential path will be inaugurated in the historic Ca’ Dolfin building, bringing Giambattista Tiepolo ’s canvases back to theAula Magna “Silvio Trentin” in a virtual guise.
Thanks to Microsoft’s HoloLens viewers, visitors will be able to admire Tiepolo’s ten canvases in their original locations, which are currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, theHermitage in St. Petersburg and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
The mixed reality of HoloLens will even allow the artworks to be interrogated to learn about peculiar aspects of them through gestures perceived by the viewers.
The project, curated by Chiara Piva, professor of Museology and History at Ca’ Foscari with the technical partnership of theUniversity’s Information Technology and Telecommunications Services Area, is a collaboration with Microsoft.
Chiara Piva said, "One of our main goals was to make visible and tell the public the history of this environment, which is part of the history of our University, a history that today is no longer perceptible. HoloLens technology is particularly interesting to us because it allows us to leave the real visible by superimposing holographic reconstructions; in this way we can recover in an immediate and unique way the relationship that existed between the walls frescoed by Nicolò Bambini and the canvases by Tiepolo that once decorated the hall. We use the digital to better understand the real."
Michele Bugliesi, Rector of Ca’ Foscari University, emphasized, “The project constitutes an interesting experiment from a scientific point of view and is a demonstration of the great potential of a field of study and research, that of the so-called ”digital humanities" that sees Ca’ Foscari active as one of the most important centers in Italy and Europe. In the year of the 150th anniversary of the foundation of our University, this initiative allows us to further enhance one of our most valuable and prestigious locations. Thanks to the mixed reality experience created with HoloLens technology, the hall reappears before the eyes of visitors in its full splendor, rich in new content and capable of evoking the emotions of a true journey through time. Thanks to Microsoft and Digital Bros game Academy for believing in the project, and thanks to our researchers who supported its realization from a scientific and art-historical point of view."
It will be possible to try the experience from May 26 by booking at www.unive.it/cafoscaritour or writing to cafoscaritour@unive.it.
