MIPAM network is born, bringing together Italian museums with collections from around the world

MIPAM - Italian Museums with Heritage from the World, the national network designed to bring together and bring into dialogue Italian museums that preserve and enhance collections from the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific, is born.

MIPAM - Musei Italiani con Patrimonio dal Mondo (Italian Museums with World Heritage), a new national network designed to bring together and bring into dialogue Italian museums that conserve and enhance collections from the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific, is officially born. The initiative aims to encourage the sharing of best practices, promote transparency in the management of works and strengthen the comparison between institutions that preserve cultural heritage from outside Europe.

The official establishment of the network took place on June 10, 2025 at the Stibbert Museum in Florence, at the end of four preparatory meetings held between 2023 and 2025 in Milan, Parma, Turin and Florence. These meetings involved numerous Italian institutions, giving rise to a professional community that brings together directors, curators, conservators and archivists active in state, municipal, university, missionary and private contexts.

Italy, in fact, holds a vast heritage of non-European works and artifacts that have arrived in the territory since the 15th century. Many of these are found in little-known or under-resourced museums, which can now rely on a network of specialists and intermuseum collaborations.

MIPAM brings together entities that are heterogeneous in terms of history, legal nature and type of collection, many of which also operate outside traditional museum circuits. Despite their differences, these institutions share a common vision: to promote research, improve accessibility, and enhance heritages of non-European works and their articulated cultural contexts of reference and provenance. Thanks to MIPAM, the member museums can count on a stable point of reference for the development of shared projects, from the creation of exhibitions and publications to training initiatives, public meetings and in-depth activities that highlight the richness of the material and intangible heritage they hold.

The birth of this network marks an important step toward greater awareness in the Italian museum scene: a system that is more interconnected, up-to-date and prepared to deal with the complex issues related to the history, ethics and conservation of the world’s cultural heritage. Promoted by MUDEC in Milan, the MIPAM network remains open to new memberships.
