MUDIC, a new exhibition venue, directly inside the Sassi of Matera, is born in Matera

MUDIC, a new exhibition space, is born in Matera, housed in a 16th-century palace in the heart of the Sassi of Matera.

Matera has a new exhibition venue, built within its historic heart, the world-famous Sassi di Matera: it is the MUDIC - Museo Diffuso Contemporaneo, a place designed to host exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, photographs and installations, as well as performances, plays, musical concerts, books, films and audiovisual productions, lectures and classes on art and artists, as well as artist residencies and workshops on art and creativity.

The MUDIC will be housed in a 16th-century palace at 78 Via d’Addozio: the building has a typical Renaissance architecture, but it also has several rooms that are partly carved out of the rock (an ancient water cistern more than five meters high also figures in the building). It is in these rooms that the MUDIC will be housed: after the inauguration, some of them will also be restored with conservation work. “The main feature that will most distinguish the MUDIC from other structures that can be visited in the Sassi of Matera,” reads a note, “will in fact be that of hosting with its own original history, in the arms of its walls as intact as possible, the paintings, sculptures, photographs, theatrical, musical or cinematographic projects that will be held. With the upcoming second restoration, the choice will again be made not to erase the traces of those who lived there in the past. The drippings on the walls, the flaws in the tiles, the protrusions of the rock, and everything that makes this place unique will remain there, where and how they are now. And it will be this incredible living that will give even more strength and counterpoint to the activities that will take place in the museum.”

MUDIC will kick off with a pre-opening that will take place on two dates: Sept. 22 and the weekend of Oct. 5-6. Sunday, Sept. 22 will mark the opening of the first exhibition of Art from the world, MUDIC’s art exhibition that will host cultural projects in Matera featuring the works of artists from around the world. On this occasion, the works of ten artists from France, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Peru, the Netherlands, Panama and Syria will be on display: Abdulwahid Khalil, Bruna Basini, Badie Jahjah, Myriam Kruisheer, Paola Moscatelli, Julieta Ortega, Majo Rivas Portilla, Monica Tambini, Rocio Valdes, and Maco Vargas. The exhibition is curated by Mimmo Centonze, MUDIC curator, and was organized in collaboration with Dubai-based gallerist Aurela Cuku.

On Saturday, Oct. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 6, the show The Conformist, written, directed and narrated by Rai 1 journalist Guido Barlozzetti, a film expert, TV author for Rai and writer, will be held instead as a preview for Italy. The show recounts the great cinema of Bernardo Bertolucci, among the most representative and internationally known Italian directors.

The museum’s logo was designed by Oliviero Toscani.
