The Island of San Lorenzo - Museum of the Cathedral Chapter in Perugia is organizing a curated workshop until January 8, 2024, in which a 1:1 scale reproduction of Perugino's Marriage of the Virgin will be made using the pictography technique.

TheIsland of San Lorenzo - Museum of the Cathedral Chapter in Perugia, as part of the project Perugino in the Sign of Time curated by the Archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve and Genesis, carried out with the contribution of the Promoting Committee of the celebrations for the fifth centenary of the death of Pietro Vannucci known as Perugino, is organizing from until January 8, 2024 a workshop curated by Bottega Tifernate in which the creation of a reproduction in scale 1:1 of the Marriage of the Virgin, using the technique of pictography.

The Marriage of the Virgin was made by Perugino between 1501 and 1504 for the Chapel of the Holy Ring in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Perugia, and it remained there until 1798 when it was requisitioned by Napoleon’s troops and is now kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen.

Because of the important role the workshop played in Perugino’s production, theIsland of San Lorenzo is also offering an educational/training event for the fall term. Pictography is a technique patented by the Bottega Tifernate that makes it possible to make reproductions of artwork with the same qualities as the painting. Years of study and research in the field of painting and restoration have made it possible to reconstruct exactly the methods and working recipes by which Renaissance painters proceeded to produce their works.

The workshop is an opportunity for the public to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a Renaissance workshop made up of drawings, dustings, brushes, varied pigments and precious wooden supports: a place where, through the mastery of the artisan repository of ancient knowledge, works of art come to life, just as they did centuries ago. The initiative also intends to be an opportunity to deepen the knowledge of the relationship that unites Perugino to Perugia Cathedral.

In addition to the building site, the Museum of the Chapter of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo can then be visited with the same entrance fee, which presents itself to the public with a new thematic layout, created on the occasion of the centenary of its foundation (1923-2023): its collection holds valuable examples of Umbrian Renaissance art, including fragments of theAltar of Pieta by Agostino di Duccio, the gonfalon of San Fiorenzo by Benedetto Bonfigli and the Altarpiece of Sant’Onofrio, an early masterpiece by Luca Signorelli.

Completing the tour is a docufilm dedicated to the history of the Holy Ring, produced in collaboration with journalist Roberto Fontolan and featuring the narrator Alessandro Haber: the docufilm tells the story of the precious jewel that arrived in the city in 1473 and has been kept in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo since 1488, inside the ancient coffer for the opening of which as many as fourteen keys are required.
