The David di Donatello Award is reaching its 65th edition this year, and for the occasion the Bargello Museum is dedicating a series of in-depth coverage of the famous bronze Renaissance statue from which the name of theimportant film award is derived, which will be broadcast on Rai1 on Friday, May 8.

On social channels, the story of Donatello’s David housed in the Bargello National Museum will be told: over time, the sculpture has represented values, such as heroism, strength, and beauty, and has become a figurative model for many subsequent phases of rebirth and cultural renewal. The public will thus be able to virtually admire the famous artist’s original David.

The official website of the Bargello Museum will also feature in-depth features, news and photo albums through which to learn more about the history and iconography of the David. On the Instagram channel @bargellomuseums, on the other hand, the David will be narrated, exploring the many reasons that have made this work an art star. From the Bargello Museums’ Instagram profile, a photo call has already been launched in which all Igers are invited to post and share their photos of the Renaissance sculpture, and on Friday, May 8, they will be republished and shared in the @bargellomuseums stories.

The David was created by Donatello around the 1540s, commissioned by Cosimo the Elder: it depicts the victorious young man as he stands over the head of the giant Goliath, whom he has just severed with his sword. And in the 1950s, the then International Film Club chose to dedicate the David di Donatello to cinematic excellence to pay homage to Italy’s fervent postwar cultural renaissance: it lent itself perfectly to being a symbol of Italian genius, creativity and stylistic perfection.
