There is a new art space in Carrara in the beautiful rooms of Palazzo del Medico: Vôtre. Here are photos

In Carrara, the Vôtre space, a new exhibition venue for quality exhibitions in the splendid rooms of the Palazzo del Medico, is in full swing.

It is now in full swing in Carrara, the Vôtre space, a new exhibition venue for contemporary art that comes to life in the splendid 18th-century rooms of the historic Palazzo del Medico, in Alberica Square, the main square in the historic center of the city of marble. The palace, designed by the architect of the Malaspina family who ruled the duchy of Massa and the principality of Carrara at the time, Alessandro Bergamini, is known for its sumptuous stucco and decorations in different types of marble that abound throughout the rooms on the main floor. Illustrious guests passed through here, such as Antonio Canova, who was a guest of the family of the Del Medico counts, owners of the building, during his stay in Carrara dated 1783 (the news is reported by biographers of the great sculptor), while later, in 1851, he welcomed Maria Anna of Savoy, Empress of Austria following her marriage to Ferdinand I.

It is in the rooms traversed by these guests that Vôtre was set up, which kicked off its exhibition activities in the spring with Floating, an anthological exhibition> by Roberto Chiabrera (Genoa, 1970), an esteemed Genoese painter whose art is deeply inspired by some of the names of great American art such as George Condo, Raymond Pettibon, and Alex Katz(an interview with the artist here). Until July 14, Vôtre hosts two parallel exhibitions: Tribute to Heinz Mack, a review that traces some stages of the career of one of the main protagonists of the contemporary German scene, Heinz Mack (Lollar, 1931), and Carrara Imperial, a tribute that sculptor Michele Chiossi (Lucca, 1970) reserves for the city of Carrara.

Tribute to Mack, curated by Chiara Guidi, exhibits a significant nucleus of works by Mack, a “sculptor and painter” by his own declaration, remembered in particular for his contributions to op art and kinetic art (such as light reliefs and dynamos, works in polished metal) and light art, of which he is one of the precursors as well as one of the greatest exponents (one recalls in particular the light carousel for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam). The Carrara exhibition, with a selection of works selected from his ceramic papers and bas-reliefs, aims to offer the public a testimony of his decades-long career “where the sign, the experimentation, the interaction of reflections, the energy of the third fire,” says the curator, "represent that innovative world that we can define Mack ZERO."

Instead, the Carrara Imperial project, curated by Vittoria Coen, aims to present a cycle of sculptures that find in the white marble of Carrara, one of Michele Chiossi’s favorite materials, motifs that refer as much to technical choices as to conceptual ones. Marble becomes in Chiossi a means of reflecting on all aspects of Western culture, from the most carefree to the most dramatic, and his works become allegories of the manners and customs of our time. "In Carrara Imperial,“ the curator points out, ”the allusion to the disintegration of our society is presentin the works, which, as contemporary ’still lifes,’ manifest themselves as themes dear to the artist."

Vôtre, which right from its name makes clear its “destination” as a space intended for everyone and with exhibition events of quality but also appealing to a large audience, is run by Nicola Ricci, an experienced gallery owner and contemporary art expert. By Ricci’s own choice, the very rich eighteenth-century spaces of the Palazzo del Medico will either be left vacant or will only host interventions that blend perfectly with the ancient surroundings, while exhibitions will be housed in the newer rooms. The exhibition program plans to alternate exhibitions by big international names in contemporary art, mid-career artists and young promises, all in collaboration with public and private museums, galleries, and foundations.

The Vôtre space opens daily (during the periods when there are exhibitions) from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. For information, you can contact 338 4417145, email associazionevotre@gmail.com or visit the official Vôtre website. Below are some photos of the new space.
