A sculpture for Margherita Hack: a sculpture will be dedicated to the astrophysicist in Milan

In a few days the winning project of A Sculpture for Margherita Hack and the public space chosen for the placement of the work, the second sculpture on public land in Milan dedicated to a historic female figure, will be known.

Fondazione Deloitte, in collaboration with Casa degli Artisti and with the support of the City of Milan - Office of Art in Public Spaces, will present the winning project of A Sculpture for Margherita Hack on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, and at the same time communicate the public space chosen for the work’s placement, as well as the jury’s motivations.

Milan will have the second sculpture on public land dedicated to a historic female figure and the highest expression of the STEM(Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) world: Margherita Hack, astrophysicist, academic and brilliant popularizer of science of the 20th century. A pioneer in her own field, a symbol of redemption capable of inspiring entire generations and a bearer of universal values and freethinker even outside the field of STEM subjects. The first sculpture dedicated to a woman placed on public land in Milan is the one honoring the heroine of the Risorgimento, Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso, in Piazza Belgioioso.

The construction project has already started and the statue will be unveiled in June 2022 to mark the centenary of her birth. The winning artist has been in residence at Casa degli Artisti, where she has had the necessary support for the creation of the work. The sculpture will be donated to the City of Milan, and Fondazione Deloitte will be responsible for the necessary maintenance in subsequent years.

The presentation of the project will be attended by Guido Borsani - President of Fondazione Deloitte, Valentina Kastlunger - President of Casa degli Artisti, Fabio Pompei - CEO of Deloitte Italia, Tommaso Sacchi - Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Milan, Vincenzo Trione - academic and art critic and President of the Jury, and Anna Wolter - astrophysicist researcher at INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera and member of the jury. Finally, the winning artist will be present.
