D&G arrive in Venice, St. Mark's Square closes in half and becomes parade location

Like every year, Dolce & Gabbana choose a square in an Italian city for their end-of-summer fashion show: this time it is Piazza San Marco in Venice. Which closes for good part and becomes the "location" of their event.

The San Marco area in Venice is preparing to close to passersby for the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show scheduled for Sunday, August 29. As it has been happening for several years, for the presentation of their new collections, the two Sicilian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana choose as their stage the squares of some Italian city: it had already happened, for example, in Naples, Palermo, last year even in Piazza della Signoria in Florence amidst a thousand controversies. This year the parade lands in Piazza San Marco, and as always the event lasts several days: it starts today, Saturday, August 28, with an exhibition of jewelry and watches at the Doge’s Palace, tomorrow a fashion show for 500 guests in the Piazzetta, next to the Basilica (at the Molo there will instead be a parade of gondoliers accompanying the models to the square), and on Monday, August 30, presentation of the new haute couture and tailoring collections at the Arsenale, with a party to follow until the next morning.

As always happens when D&G choose a city for their fashion shows, there will be inconveniences for residents, tourists, and merchants in the affected areas. On Sunday, for example, between 5 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., a large part of St. Mark’s Square will be closed to passersby and access from the Ponte della Paglia and the Ponte della Zecca will be prohibited. From 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., access to the foundations of the Giardini Reali from the Accademia Bridge will be prohibited, and the entire area between the Giardini and the Zecca Bridge will have to remain clear. Again, controlled access from 8 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday at the Rialto Fish Market. Of course, commercial activities insisting on the Piazzetta and the Pier will be suspended. Fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros will be imposed on violators. Changes will also be made to public transportation: in particular, on Sunday, August 29, the San Marco Vallaresso waterbus landing will be suspended from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.

Several celebrities are expected to attend the parade, also because, once the three-day D&G event is over, the Venice Film Festival will begin (on Sept. 1). Among the stars who have already arrived in the lagoon, for example, is Sharon Stone, who is in Venice precisely for D&G. The catwalk will be set up next to the Basilica: since yesterday morning, workers have been at work assembling the structures.
