Donatello's Carafa head will represent Naples at Matera 2019

Donatello's bronze statue of a horse's head, preserved at the MANN in Naples, will be on display for three months at Matera 2019.

MANN Naples director Paolo Giulierini is proud to be able to announce that the large bronze horse head (1.75 meters) will be hosted for three months in Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019, at the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in Palazzo Lanfranchi.

It is the bronze statue made by Donatello, better known as Testa Carafa, after the name of the palace that housed the work before it was acquired by MANN.

"Donatello’s horse head, one of the symbols of the city of Naples will represent the Archaeological Museum of Naples at Matera 2019. We are happy to be among the protagonists of the biggest exhibition ever in Italy to reread the Renaissance from the South, scheduled for next spring," Giulierini said.

The Carafa head will be accompanied by the Torsos of the Dioscuri, from Roman art, in the exhibition that will run from April to July 2019.
