Florence, maintenance work begins on Pitti Palace ramps

In Florence, maintenance work has begun on the rustication of the ramps of the Pitti Palace: it is the first intervention since World War II.

In Florence, for the first time since World War II, work has begun on the maintenance of the ashlar walls of the two ramps leading to the Pitti Palace. The work follows, a month later, the maintenance of the pavement of the right-hand ramp in Piazza Pitti, where there had been a slight detachment of a stone fragment.

Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Galleries, stressed, "Museums are not mere ’containers’ of works of art but ’living’ places that participate in the cultural and social communication of the city. In this sense, all the activities undertaken, including the dutiful work of maintenance and cleaning of the rustication are significant for the protection and enhancement as well as for a better use of the Palace and the square itself. In all likelihood the work, which has continued despite the light rain these days, should be finished by Easter Sunday when admission to our museums will be free."
The work is estimated to last two weeks, assuming the weather conditions are favorable.
