Mibac acquired Ungaretti's correspondence and manuscripts and Leopardi's letters

A corpus of manuscripts and correspondence by Giuseppe Ungaretti and three letters by Giacomo Leopardi: these are the new acquisitions of the Mibac.

Acquired from Mibac a corpus of manuscripts and correspondence by Giuseppe Ungaretti, arranged in 13 folders, to which belong poetic texts, prose, critical texts, drafts and notes, and three letters by Giacomo Leopardi.

The new acquisitions will become part of the National Central Library of Rome, in the case of Ungaretti’s manuscripts and correspondence, and the National Library of Naples, in the case of Leopardi’s letters.

Minister of Cultural Heritage Alberto Bonisoli said, “The country’s cultural heritage is today enriched by the precious autograph testimonies of two great authors of Italian literature.”

Paola Passarelli, director general of Libraries and Cultural Institutes, added, “The purchase by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities of the three letters of Giacomo Leopardi and the correspondence of Giuseppe Ungaretti responds to the institutional mission of preserving documents and testimonies of high cultural value and at the same time constitutes a true operation of memory. Making it now possible for the public to access Leopardi’s letters, with their personal and inner atmospheres, and Ungaretti’s correspondences with a good part of the Italian intellectual world of the twentieth century means enhancing their cultural value to the highest degree, making them a common heritage of the country’s memory.”

The documentary material of Ungaretti and Leopardi would have gone to auction by Minerva Finarte, instead it was purchased at a cost of 125,000 euros for Ungaretti’s correspondence and 100,000 euros for Leopardi’s letters.
