Naples, work begins on restoration of historic greenery at Villa Floridiana

A new phase begins for the Villa Floridiana (Naples) park with the opening of the site dedicated to the restoration of the green areas. An intervention with a total duration of about eight months.

After months of in-depth investigations and targeted maintenance work, a new phase for the park of the Villa Floridiana (Naples) begins, with the opening of the construction site dedicated to the restoration of the green areas. In continuity with the actions undertaken during 2025, the National Museums of the Vomero and the Regional Directorate National Museums Campania announce the start of an intervention lasting a total of about eight months, aimed at securing the park, protecting the plant heritage and gradually returning public portions of this currently inaccessible green lung of the Vomero hill.

The start of the work represents the outcome of a long and complex preliminary process of study, analysis and preparatory work, considered indispensable to operate consciously on a historic garden of exceptional landscape, botanical and cultural value. The entire area of the park was surveyed using laser scanner technology, allowing an extremely accurate restitution of the state of the sites and the tree species present. This activity was accompanied by a georeferenced census of more than a thousand trees, each identified and catalogued, which made it possible to construct a detailed mapping of the Floridiana’s entire plant heritage.

On this basis, in-depth visual and instrumental surveys were conducted, aimed at assessing the health and stability conditions of each individual specimen. The analyses, also carried out with the support of tree climbing specialists, involved the use of advanced technologies such as sonic tomography, resistographs, root-holding tests and controlled tensile tests, tools that made it possible to identify critical issues not always detectable by simple visual observation.

The results of these activities flowed into the Tree Risk Management Map, prepared in a GIS environment, an important tool for the overall reading of the park and for planning targeted interventions in accordance with the principles of safety, protection and conservation. Based on the assessments that have emerged, the project envisages differentiated interventions on the tree stock, calibrated on a case-by-case basis and with different levels of incisiveness: from ordinary care and maintenance actions, to structural rebalancing interventions, up to more specific operations, always accompanied by compensation and reintegration measures, with a view to sustainable and long-term management.

Alongside the study phase, concrete care and maintenance interventions have been initiated that have already produced significant results in terms of safety and accessibility of the park. The first phytotherapy treatments have allowed, for example, the reopening of some previously forbidden areas, such as the Ceppaia walkway. In parallel, work was carried out on the lighting systems and irrigation system in several areas of the park, as well as the reactivation of the public toilets, which are now fully functional. Specific treatments have also made it possible to eradicate the turtle mealybug infestation that was affecting some of the pines in the lawn in front of the Duca di Martina Museum.

The work is part of the “Restoration of the green areas of the Villa Floridiana Park,” funded by ALES S.p.A., an in-house company of the Ministry of Culture. The construction site will be organized in phases and lots, in order to limit the impact on the accessibility of the park and accompany the planned transformations in a gradual way, constantly keeping the safety of visitors and the quality of the experience at the center. The intervention is part of a broader, integrated vision of enhancing the entire Floridiana complex and the Duca di Martina Museum. In parallel, the installation of the Genius Loci project at the museum is underway these days, which includes new room paneling attentive to different levels of accessibility and the creation of a digital twin for virtual visits, expanding the possibilities of knowledge and fruition even at a distance. These interventions will be accompanied by further actions to improve the spaces: the restoration and enrichment of the play areas, the installation of sports equipment and watering points for dogs, the design of a future dedicated dog-walking area, as well as the rehabilitation and re-functionalization of the greenhouses area, currently under contract, which will allow to restore decorum, vitality and new services to the upper part of the park.
