New frescoes discovered in the Basilica of St. Benedict in Norcia

Following the collapse of a wall inside the Basilica of St. Benedict in Norcia, new frescoes dating to the 15th century have resurfaced.

The earthquake-induced collapse of a wall inside the Basilica of St. Benedict in Norcia has uncovered new frescoes located on the left wall of the church.

These would date from around the 15th century, but it still remains a mystery who painted them; they depict the Madonna Enthroned with Child and angels. “We will try to figure out the author; for the time being, the work needs to be secured and protected from pictorial film through veiling,” said Superintendent Marica Mercalli. She added, “Sometimes the earthquake also reserves positive surprises.”

The discovery was made in the first days of debris removal; this operation will lead to the completion of the metal cage that will serve as protection for the facade.

The rediscovered frescoes will soon undergo surface cleaning and partial consolidation thanks to the intervention of specialized restorers from the company CobeC, under the scientific direction of theHigher Institute for Conservation and Restoration.
