Record number of visits to the Uffizi Galleries for the May 1 bridge

The Uffizi Galleries posted record visits for the May 1 bridge: 62,954 total visitors.

Between April 28 and May 1, the Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens were visited by 62,954 people, a record made possible by the special opening on Monday, April 30, as state museums usually close on the first day of the week. The special openings on Monday and Tuesday gave 27,526 more guests the opportunity to visit the museums than in 2017.

Specifically, April 28 saw a 13.6 percent growth in visitors, the 29th a 4.2 percent growth over the previous year, for overall growth of 78 percent.

Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Galleries, commented, "With the new record number of visitors for the May 1 bridge, the Uffizi Galleries reconfirm their crucial role as an economic engine for Florence and all of Tuscany, as well as an incubator of knowledge and cultural exchange between peoples. It is with great pleasure that we record that the trend of remarkable growth for the grand ducal, royal and imperial palace of Palazzo Pitti with its four museums(Treasury of the Grand Dukes, Palatine Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art and Museum of Fashion and Costume) continues strongly, after the extraordinary results of the last months, and in particular of the recent Easter weekend. What’s more, during the four days of the May 1 bridge we were able to accommodate 4,692 more visitors to Pitti than last year (plus 132 percent). We hope that this solid trend will continue in the months to come, thanks also to the many musical and cultural initiatives being planned, including the important Pontormo exhibition opening next week (’Miraculous Encounters: Pontormo from Drawing to Painting’ at Palazzo Pitti, in the Sala delle Nicchie, May 8-July 29, 2018)."
