Rome, Auditorium churchyard expansion approved. Investment approximately 3.5 million euros

The Capitoline Council has given the go-ahead for the expansion of the "Sagrato" of the Ennio Morricone Auditorium Parco della Musica. The total investment amounts to about 3.5 million euros.

The Capitoline Council has given the green light to the extension of the “Sagrato” of theEnnio Morricone Auditorium Parco della Musica, approving the Technical and Economic Feasibility Plan of the project signed by Renzo Piano’s studio.

The intervention aims to enhance the entrance to the complex through the extension and redevelopment of pedestrian spaces, along with a re-functionalization of the area in front, so as to create a new large public square in continuity with the urban axis of Via Guido Reni. The total investment amounts to about 3.5 million euros.

The project includes new paving and the redefinition of the access from via Pietro de Coubertin, with the enlargement of the “Sagrato”: a succession of green spaces and squares designed to become the beating heart of the Auditorium’s activities and the life of the neighborhood. The concept proposes an open urban design, integrated with the surrounding context, with two new paths surrounded by greenery: one pertaining to the Auditorium and one for predominantly public use. The pedestrian area will extend from the main entrance to the Cavea, in continuity with the existing arcade overlooked by commercial and restaurant activities.

The new paving will be achieved by removing the existing asphalt layer, so as to reconnect the height of the arcade with that of the green and return a large permeable pedestrian area.

There will be three main strips of the new arrangement: the first, near the main access to the Auditorium and the Cavea, organized into squares capable of hosting events and initiatives; the second, characterized by extensive green areas and new trees to increase environmental comfort; and the third, next to the existing green spaces, with a promenade surrounded by greenery, enriched by new seating and lighting. A specific intervention will also affect the entrance area under the Corso Francia viaduct: it will be redesigned with travertine paving, green ponds, new suspended lighting, retractable bollards and a different location of the control cage.

In total, the project will bring 800 square meters of new green surfaces, the redevelopment of existing areas and the planting of about thirty new trees. With the use of natural materials, the new churchyard will return about 4260 square meters of permeable soil to the city, contributing to a reduction in the heat island and more effective stormwater management, thus reducing the risk of flooding.

“It continues our urban regeneration operation that aims to strengthen the cultural and innovative role of international scope of the Flaminio quadrant,” said Mayor Roberto Gualtieri. “The new Auditorium parvis is part of an overall design that aims to improve the quality and usability of public spaces. We want the Auditorium to become for citizens and visitors an even greener and more livable place, more and more living up to its vocation that have made it one of the most appreciated and experienced international spaces on an architectural and cultural level.”

“The enlargement of the Rome Auditorium’s Sagrato is part of a larger framework of interventions to enhance the Flaminio quadrant. The positioning with respect to the Via Pietro de Coubertin - Via Guido Reni axis in fact allows a direct relationship with the future Tramway line M2 - 22 and with the intervention of the Palazzetto di Nervi area for the City of 15 minutes. The first phase, which will focus on the extension of the Sagrato, will allow to connect the city with the activities of the Parco della Musica in a single urban fabric, with appurtenant areas and canopies between the portico and the square, street furniture that complements the existing, a new driveway access and the management of the spaces intended for the activities of the Film Festival along the Promenade,” explains Maurizio Veloccia, Councillor for Urban Planning.
