Work on the completion of the Jesus Christ Tower of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona continues apace. On January 14, 2026, the fourth and final horizontal arm of the cross that will top the tower was installed, marking a new phase in the construction site of the temple designed by Antoni Gaudí. The operation follows the installation of the third arm a few days earlier, and that of the lower arm, the central core and the horizontal arms connected to the Nativity and Passion facades, placed in the previous weeks. When completed, the cross will reach a total height of 17 meters and a width of 13.5 meters, dimensions comparable to those of a building of about five stories. The structure will form the culminating element of the Tower of Jesus Christ, destined to become the highest point of the entire Sagrada Família complex.
Formally, the arms of the cross follow the double-twist geometry that Gaudí had conceived for the columns and crosses of the temple. Each element has a square section at the outer end and an octagonal section at the inner end, which grafts into the central core of the structure. Each arm has a weight of about 12.8 tons and dimensions of 4.40 meters by 4.50 meters by 4.50 meters, data that render the technical complexity of the intervention and the precision required in the assembly operations at height.
The materials used respond to the indications contained in the so-called temple albums, the documents that collect Gaudí’s original ideas and plans for the Sagrada Família. The Catalan architect had envisioned a cross capable of shining in daylight and being visible even at night. For this reason, white glazed ceramic and glass were chosen, two materials characterized by high luminosity and, at the same time, good resistance to atmospheric agents. Night lighting will be provided by a system of spotlights placed on the towers of the Evangelists and Apostles, which will be responsible for illuminating the pinnacle of the tower of Jesus Christ.
Inside the cross will be a space for the sculpture of theAgnus Dei, created by Italian artist Andrea Mastrovito. The work will be placed according to Gaudí’s original design, which called for the symbolic presence of the Lamb of God within the tower’s summit structure. The completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ is scheduled to coincide with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death, an anniversary that falls in 2026.
