Special tours such as a 19th-century Grand Tour of the Basilica of the Holy Cross

The Basilica of the Holy Cross experiments with special tours inspired by the nineteenth-century Grand Tour. Spaces and works not usually accessible can also be visited.

The Basilica of Santa Croce has reopened the entire monumental complex to the public and is experimenting with a special visit model inspired by the 19th-century Grand Tour that will allow the public to access spaces and works that are not usually accessible. The initiative will start on July 8 and will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays. It will be a slow tour lasting an hour and a half that is based on a more personal and intimate relationship between visitors, space and works. “We have constructed the reopening of the Monumental Complex as a continuous and unexpected unveiling. Not a return to how it was as much as a surprising new discovery,” stressed Irene Sanesi, president of the Opera di Santa Croce.

“The new system of visits for the Santa Croce complex,” added Tommaso Sacchi, alderman for Culture of the City of Florence, “enriches the city’s cultural offerings with an additional piece and is part of a new model of development, tourism and knowledge that privileges slowness and intimacy over the classic massed visit, a model that the City can only support with conviction.”

“The new reception system of Santa Croce is based on the search for a new and deeper relationship with visitors,” points out Stefano Filipponi, secretary general. “With this project, it will be possible to experience a special experience, very similar to that of 19th-century travelers from all over the world, who fell in love with the Italian and Florentine artistic heritage.” An app will be available, free to download to your device in English and Italian.

The Grand Tour visit will allow visitors to tour the worship area, open the gate of the Bardi di Vernio Chapel guarded by Donatello’s face of Christ, enter the Bardi di Mangona Chapel where Maso di Banco tells the Stories of Pope Sylvester and Constantine, pause in the sacristy where Cimabue’s Crucifix is visible, enter the Rinuccini Chapel with frescoes by Giovanni da Milano, and visit the Pazzi Chapel.

It will be possible to experience the special visit only on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.).

Reservations can be made online from www.santacroceopera.it.

Tickets can also be purchased directly at the ticket office.
Tickets with free app-guide and reservation: 8 euros for the visit on Saturdays and Sundays; 25 euros for the special midweek visit on Wednesdays and Fridays.
