Uffizi and National Library of Florence sign research agreement

The Uffizi Galleries and the National Library of Florence have signed a research agreement to pool their digital archives.

The Uffizi Galleries and the National Central Library of Florence have signed a research agreement to pool their archives for more comprehensive and detailed computer surveys. In fact, the two institutions of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities are collaborating to foster dialogue and integration between their digital archives, thus enabling richer and more comprehensive computer surveys for all users.

Thanks to a pact signed by the director of the National Central Library of Florence, Luca Bellingeri, and the director of the Uffizi Galleries, Eike Schmidt, a team made up of librarians, preservation specialists and computer scientists has made possible the synergy between the catalogs of the two institutions. So now, through the National Central Library of Florence’sonline Thesaurus, which is rich in more than 60,000 terms, links are created between descriptions of works of art from the Florentine heritage in the Uffizi Galleries’ online catalog and publications on the same subject owned by the National Library; at the same time, the Uffizi Galleries have enriched the functionality of their digital archives by integrating references to the Thesaurus into their cataloguing search tools, thus ensuring bidirectional interaction between the two institutions’ databases.

This model of collaboration, Bellingeri emphasizes, “is proof of how, in the world of cultural heritage, the use of common, open and integrable tools is fundamental, while respecting the standards of the domains to which they belong.” And, Schmidt adds, “from today, with this agreement, art and library heritage increasingly speak the same language.”
