As part of the celebrations of GO! 2025 - European Capital of Culture, on Friday, September 19, 2025, theAdriafer Rail Services Workshop in Gorizia, located at SDAG Interporto - Sant’Andrea Boundary Station, will host a cultural event dedicated to the role of rail as an infrastructure of peace and connection.
The initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Italian FS Foundation and Adriafer, with the support of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region and under the patronage of GO! 2025, with the aim of enhancing the railway network as an element of tourism, cultural and industrial development for the entire cross-border territory.
Among the most anticipated moments of the day is, at 5:30 p.m., the presentation of a new mobile installation signed by Emilio Isgrò (Barcellona di Sicilia, 1937). The work consists of a single grain of wheat transported by an Adriafer electric locomotive: a symbol of the encounter between contemporary art, technology and environmentally friendly mobility. On the sides of the convoy, the artist has applied his unmistakable stylistic signature, causing the phrase, “This train carries a grain of wheat,” to emerge from the erasure.
This is not the first time Isgrò has created works of this kind. In 1998 he donated to his hometown a monumental orange seed, seven meters high and transported by a thirteen-meter Tir, on which the words “This vehicle transports an orange seed” read. The work was intended for the old station area, once the departure point for trains heading north loaded with citrus fruits. In 2023, however, a truck bound for northern Italy and Europe left from San Pier Niceto, the home town of his paternal family, carrying a single ant, another hallmark of his poetics.
With the Gorizia locomotive, Isgrò renews this poetics of small elements that become universal symbols: from the orange seed to the ant to the grain of wheat, minimal and almost invisible elements are transformed through the language of Erasure into symbols that evoke life, nourishment and the future. The artist thus reaffirms an idea of art that knows how to be a spokesman for collective values: attention to the marginal and fragile, which sustains the natural and cultural balance of our civilization.
