Ambrogio Lorenzetti in Maremma stars in new exhibition

Ambrogio Lorenzetti is back in the spotlight of an exhibition: it is 'Ambrogio Lorenzetti in Maremma. Masterpieces from the Territories of Grosseto and Siena', from June 2 to September 16, 2018.

The great Ambrogio Lorenzetti (Siena, c. 1290 - 1348), after the important monographic exhibition held in Siena this winter(here is our detailed review), is back in the spotlight of a new exhibition event focused on his presence in Maremma: this is the exhibition Ambrogio Lorenzetti in Maremma. Masterpieces from the territories of Grosseto and Siena, which features eleven works by the Sienese painter. The exhibition is being held in Massa Marittima (province of Grosseto), at the San Pietro all’Orto Museum Complex, from June 2 to September 16, 2018.

After the Siena exhibition brought the art of one of the main protagonists of 14th-century European painting back to the center of attention, the Maremma review intends to be a continuation of the Santa Maria della Scala monographic exhibition, also in view of the fact that one of Lorenzetti’s masterpieces, the great tempera and gold Maestà on panel, is preserved precisely in Massa Marittima. It is a work with a complex iconography, with the Madonna enthroned in the center, preceded by allegories of the three theological virtues seated on the steps of the throne, and flanked by figures of saints and prophets. The exhibition, supplemented by videos and multimedia panels, offers an overview of Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s production focusing on his Maremma works. Among the works on display are the polyptych of St. Peter in Castelvecchio, the polyptych of the Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Paul painted for the church of Roccalbegna, as well as the painted cross from the Pieve di Montenero d’Orcia, the stained-glass window with St. Michael the Archangel, the sinopites from the Montesiepi frescoes, and the Allegory of the Redemption from the Pinacoteca di Siena. The tour of the exhibition concludes with a visit to the places in Massa Marittima where Ambrogio Lorenzetti worked: the church of San Pietro all’Orto and the cathedral of San Cerbone.

Visiting hours: from June 2 to June 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., from July 1 to Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets: full 7 euros, reduced 5 euros.
