On the occasion of the seventh edition of the Brescia Photo Festival under the artistic direction of Renato Corsini, an exhibition dedicated to Chiara Samugheo (Bari, Italy, 1935 - 2022), an important photographer of the international star system and beyond, is proposed in Brescia at MO.CA, Center for New Cultures, entitled Chiara Samugheo. Inside Cinema. About fifty photographs of the artist from theMauro Raffini Archive will be on display. The exhibition, in fact, is curated by Mauro Raffini himself. The Brescia Photo Festival was born from the collaboration between Ma.Co.f - Centro della Fotografia Italiana and Fondazione Brescia Musei.

In the years when Chiara Samugheo approached photography, it was really rare to find professional women photographers. This gives Samugheo the remarkable distinction of being the first woman photographer in our country. Samugheo revolutionized celebrity-related photography with her innovative approach.

Samugheo always focused her attention exclusively on the celebrities who contributed to making cinema one of the most popular and beloved forms of expression in the entertainment society that developed following the global affirmation of the Lumière brothers’ invention. Samugheo’s fame quickly became global, called upon to collaborate with major film, fashion and lifestyle magazines, including Cinema Nuovo, Le Ore, Epoca, Stern, Vogue, Paris Match, Life, Vanity Fair and many others.

When Henri Cartier-Bresson met with her to ask her to join theMagnum Agency, she declined. The work was very demanding of her; she had already achieved the desired fame and signed covers that have entered the history of publishing and costume.

Her feminine gaze contributed to the sexual liberation movement that characterized the 1960s, and her lack of forethought, from the synthesis of the “posed” photo and the snapshot captured on the fly, led her to create photo shoots that were highly appreciated in Italy and abroad.
