Coming to Novara Castle a major exhibition on the 19th century in the collection: works by Boldini, Segantini, Zandomeneghi and many others


The Castle of Novara will host from October 20, 2018 to February 24, 2019 the exhibition Ottocento in collezione. From the Macchiaioli to Segantini.

The exhibition"Nineteenth Century in the Collection. From the Macchiaioli to Segantini," which can be visited from Oct. 20, 2018 to Feb. 24, 2019.

Works of painting and sculpture created by great artists, such as Giovanni Boldini, Giuseppe De Nittis, Giovanni Fattori, Carlo Fornara, Domenico and Gerolamo Induno, Silvestro Lega, Angelo Morbelli, Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, Giovanni Segantini, and Federico Zandomeneghi, from private collections, will be on display.

The exhibition itinerary divided into eight sections will begin with a presentation of the affirmation of the poetics of truth in the transition from historical-Risorgimento themes to the daily life of the new Savoy state, continuing with landscape in its naturalist sense and with a comparison between pictorial and sculptural portraits. It will continue with painting and sculpture inspired by pastoral and rural life as well as bourgeois life. Labor themes with social denunciations and the experiments of Divisionist painting will then be analyzed.

Among the main masterpieces on display are Silvestro Lega’s La curiosità,Antonio Fontanesi’s large landscape Aprile, Giuseppe De Nittis’ Hyde Park, Giovanni Boldini’s Il pastello rosa, Angelo Morbelli’s Divisionist masterpiece Venduta! and Petalo di rosa, a symbolist painting by Giovanni Segantini.

The exhibition is curated by Sergio Rebora and Elisabetta Staudacher, assisted by a scientific committee composed of Luisa Martorelli, Fernando Mazzocca and Aurora Scotti Tosini; it is organized by METS Percorsi d’arte in collaboration with the Novara Castle Foundation, under the patronage of the Piedmont Region and the City of Novara, and with the support of Banco BPM (main sponsor) and Fondazione CRT.
