December in Milan, the exhibitions to see in 2 days

Three exhibitions transform Milan into a crossroads of eras and languages: from Appiani's Neoclassicism, to Man Ray's visual experimentation, to Iñárritu's multisensory installation at the Fondazione Prada. An autumn of art not to be missed.

Milan is experiencing an intense autumn of art, with three events that transform the city into a crossroads of languages, eras and visions. A double narrative takes shape at Palazzo Reale: on the one hand, the neoclassical elegance of Andrea Appiani, the protagonist of a retrospective that traces his relationship with Enlightenment and Napoleonic Milan; on the other, the daring universe of Man Ray, a 20th-century master capable of reinventing photography, objects and visual imagery. Two distinct paths that dialogue through the city’s history and show how Milan knows how to welcome both formal discipline and the most radical experimentation.

Rounding out this panorama comes Alejandro G. Iñárritu ’s new multisensory installation at the Fondazione Prada, a project that interweaves cinema and visual arts to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Amores Perros. An experience that invites confrontation with memory, perception and narrative through a device designed to engage the viewer on multiple levels.

Between the Palazzo Reale and the Fondazione Prada, Milan is thus configured as an open laboratory, capable of offering a broad look at distant eras and profoundly different art forms. Those who choose to visit the city during these months will find three complementary exhibitions, united by the ambition to investigate the power of images and the way art continues to shape identity, culture and the collective imagination.

1. Andrea Appiani at the Royal Palace

When: 9/23/2025 to 11/01/2026

Where: Royal Palace

From September 23, 2025 to January 11, 2026, the Royal Palace in Milan will host an exhibition entirely dedicated to Andrea Appiani (Milan, 1754 - 1817), among the greatest representatives of Italian Neoclassicism (to read Federico Giannini ’s review click here). The exhibition project, entitled Appiani. The initiative is promoted by the City of Milan - Culture and realized by Palazzo Reale with Civita Mostre e Musei, Electa and MondoMostre. The project has been able to count on important partnerships with French museum institutions such as the Châteaux de Malmaison et de Bois, the Grand Palais and the Louvre, as well as the collaboration of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Metropolitan City of Milan, the Pinacoteca di Brera and Villa Carlotta. The exhibition is curated by Fernando Mazzocca, Francesco Leone and Domenico Piraina.
