Florence hosts first monographic exhibition on Ottavio Leoni, Caravaggio's celebrated portrait painter


From November 16, 2019 to February 16, 2020, the Fondazione CR Firenze is hosting the first monographic exhibition on Ottavio Leoni.

Fondazione CR Firenze and Accademia Toscana di Scienze e Lettere “La Colombaria” are dedicating an exhibition to the splendid portraits by Ottavio Leoni (Rome, 1578 - 1630), best known for his famous portrait of Caravaggio. The exhibition, scheduled from November 16, 2019 to February 16, 2020, is titled Faces and Stories. Ottavio Leoni (1578-1630) portraitist in the Accademia Colombaria and Florentine collections, and is the first monographic exhibition dedicated to the portraitist.

Held at the Spazio Mostre of Fondazione CR Firenze, the exhibition, curated by Piera Giovanna Tordella, displays sixty-one works, largely splendid drawings made between the late sixteenth century and 1629, depicting multiple personages, from those of the nobility Rome, including family members of popes, gentlemen and gentlewomen, distinguished cardinals, “men of arms and government,” and even “poets, musicians and artists” to women of the people admired and drawn by the artist.
