Giuseppe Magni's 19th century ceramics on display in Gubbio

The exhibition 'Giuseppe Magni and the Italian Majolica of Historicism' opened in Gubbio, dedicated to the Umbrian ceramist and other great manufacturers of the time.

The exhibition Giuseppe Magni and the Italian Majolica of Historicism, dedicated to the figure of Giuseppe Magni (Gubbio, 1819 - 1917), has kicked off at the Ducal Palace in Gubbio: the project is to highlight this important goldsmith, decorator and miniaturist who spanned a century of history, starting a school that has continued production in his style almost to the present day. A number of works by him and other Italian factories that operated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the wake of historicism andeclecticism, Magni’s two reference movements, have been gathered at the Ducal Palace. So there will be works from the Ginori factory in Doccia, the Cantagalli factory in Florence, the Achille Farina company in Faenza, the Angelo Minghetti factory in Bologna, Ceramiche Artistiche Molaroni in Pesaro and Pio Fabri ceramics in Rome.

The phase in the history of ceramics that the exhibition, curated by Ettore A. Sanapoli, intends to investigate is one of the most important since, we read in the presentation, “in the second half of the nineteenth century, it saw a great impetus animate painters, ornamentists and decorators, driven in a sort of artistic pilgrimage to the cities that boasted an ancient tradition in majolica with the aim of reviving its splendor and regaining the lost craft.” A total of 64 works are on display (including 32 made by Giuseppe Magni) from public and private collections in Umbria: these are ceramics with traditional subjects (myths, allegories, portraits, religious and literary subjects). Giuseppe Magni, trained in Perugia, hardly ever moved from his hometown of Gubbio, but here, thanks in part to a position as a drawing master in the municipal technical schools, he trained generations of young artists. He was one of the most prolific ceramists of his time.

The exhibition will run until May 20, 2018, and can be visited during the opening hours of the Ducal Palace of Gubbio: from November to April, from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., in May also on Mondays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. It can be accessed with the entrance ticket to the Ducal Palace (full 5 euros, reduced 2.50 euros). The exhibition is desired by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia and is organized by Polo Museale dell’Umbria, Fondazione CariPerugia Arte and Associazione Maggio Eugubino with the patronage of the Municipality of Gubbio.
