Letizia Battaglia on display in Forlì: 50 years of photography

More than 200 shots of Letizia Battaglia chronicle her artistic and civic journey from 1970 to 2020 at the Museo Civico San Domenico in Forlì, in an updated exhibition with unpublished photographs, magazines and a docufilm about her life.

From Oct. 18, 2025, to Jan. 11, 2026, the San Domenico Civic Museum in Forli will host a major exhibition dedicated to Letizia Battaglia, a Sicilian photographer who passed away in 2022 and whose work marked the history of Italian photography and social reportage. The exhibition, titled Letizia Battaglia. The Work: 1970-2020, is curated by Walter Guadagnini and offers an articulated narrative of more than 50 years of her career, reconstructing the author’s artistic, professional and civic path through more than 200 photographs, books, newspapers and magazines from her personal archive.

The exhibition project is the result of a collaboration between CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography, the Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris and the Letizia Battaglia Archive, and for the Forlì stop sees the organizational contribution of the Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì and the Municipality of Forlì. The Italian exhibition represents an updated version of the previous French exhibitions, presented in 2024 at the Jeu de Paume in Tours and in 2025 at the Rencontres d’Arles international festival, enriched with unpublished photographs and editorial materials that expand the narrative of the photographer’s work. This is the first Italian leg of the exhibition.

In addition to photographic images, the exhibition includes 22 magazines with which Battaglia collaborated, in some cases also serving as founder and editor. The exhibition also includes a docufilm on the photographer’s life, offering a more complete picture of her activity and the social context in which she worked. The display aims to document the variety of her interests, from news reporting to social photography, from civil reportage to artistic experimentation, highlighting the continuity of her commitment and the consistency of her critical gaze on society.

The San Domenico Civic Museum, already linked to the cultural activities promoted by the photographer, becomes a place to enhance a heritage that has helped define the visual memory of Sicily and contemporary Italy. Battaglia’s photographs, rigorous and direct, carefully and unfiltered document daily life, organized crime, political and social events, offering a cross-section of the country through the attentive eye of a photographer who has been able to combine aesthetic research and civil testimony.
