Galleria Russo in Rome is hosting the exhibition Margherita Sarfatti and Art in Italy between the Wars from March 12 to April 4, 2020.

Through works dedicated to Margherita Sarfatti by artists of the early 20th century, including unpublished works from the Sarfatti Fund, the exhibition aims to give relevance to her unique role in the artistic world.

More than five hundred works by artists contemporary with her, such as Mario Sironi, Umberto Boccioni, and Filippo De Pisis, will be on display, as well as some previously unpublished works by artists she promoted, such as a Landscape by Corrado Cagli, still lifes by André Derain, Alberto Salietti, and Fausto Pirandello, a Marina by Achille Funi, a Pappagallo by Pasquarosa (the only female artist in the exhibition), and a Portrait of Margherita Sarfatti by Quirino Ruggeri.

The artistic tastes of “donna Margherita” often favored modern and fashionable artists. In addition to her critical activity, she started her own collection in which included works by Mario Sironi, Adolfo Wildt, Medardo Rosso, Umberto Boccioni and Gaetano Previati, but also by earlier artists, especially Milanese scapigliati and Giorgio De Chirico, whose unpublished 1927 portrait dedicated to Sarfatti is on display in the exhibition.

“An indissoluble bond that of Margherita Sarfatti and the Italian artistic Novecento. GalleriaRusso with this exhibition aims to place Margherita Sarfatti in a more complete perspective as an avant-garde icon and celebrates all the artists who constituted the ’court’ of the woman of the twentieth century,” declares the gallery’s director, Fabrizio Russo.
