Mario Schifano and Italian Pop Art on display in Asolo, Italy

From Dec. 17, 2017 to April 2, 2018 in Asolo, Italy, an exhibition investigates Italian pop art: it is titled 'Pop Art: Why Rome?'

From Dec. 17, 2017, to April 2, 2018, the exhibition “Pop Art: Why Rome?”, an excursus on Italian Pop Art, will be on display at the Civic Museum of Asolo (TV). The exhibition will be inaugurated on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 9 p.m. at the Council Chamber of Asolo City Hall with a presentation by Francesco Boni and art curator Enrica Feltracco.

Protagonist of the review will be Mario Schifano, the main exponent of Italian Pop Art, who was born in Homs (Libya) on Sept. 20, 1934, and died in Rome on Jan. 26, 1998.And it was precisely Rome that was the epicenter of a new artistic current that continued throughout much of the 20th century thanks precisely to Schifano and, later, other artists such as Michelangelo Pistoletto, Tano Festa, Giosetta Fioroni, Mimmo Rotella, Renato Mambor, Mario Ceroli, Franco Angeli, Aldo Mondino, Concetto Pozzati, Lucio del Pezzo, Cesare Tacchi, and Umberto Bignardi.

“A life, that of Mario Schifano - in the words of curator Feltracco - tormented, as for many of his companions of the time, that remains imprisoned in his works. This exhibition set up at the Museo Civico di Asolo will not only tell the story of Mario Schifano, but of all those who together with him turned first Rome and then the world of Italian contemporary art upside down: not only, therefore, with what is simplistically defined as ”pop" and which is always associated with the School of Piazza del Popolo. A completely different approach to Italian Pop art is necessary: unlike American Pop art, it is totally imbued with the culture, life, and everyday life of those whirlwind years, imbued with a kind of desperate optimism that now seems unattainable to us. Italian Pop is more intimate, perhaps more difficult to understand, less direct and shouted than its glossy American sister."

The exhibition is organized by the City of Asolo - Assessorato alla Cultura, the Museo Civico and Matteo Vanzan ’s MV Eventi agency in Lonigo (Vi) and sponsored by Cassa di Risparmio del Veneto, Settentrionale Trasporti, Piazzetta, Scarpa, Allianz Assicurazioni, Studio Bacchin e Associati, Tenuta Amadio, Progress Profiles and Abitare ad Asolo.

The exhibition will be open to visitors on Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., while December 25, 2017 and January 1, 2018 will be closed. Full ticket price €8, reduced €6, family admission €22 (2 adults and 2 minors). For information and reservations you can call 0423952313, or email info@museoasolo.it. Photo credit museoasolo.it
