Picasso, de Chirico and Dalí in dialogue with Raphael: a major exhibition at Mart in Rovereto

The Mart in Rovereto is hosting a major exhibition on how Raphael Sanzio influenced three famous artists of the 20th century: Picasso, de Chirico and Dalí.

The Mart in Rovereto inaugurates its new exhibition season with a major exhibition dedicated to Raphael and three of the most important artists of the 20th century, Picasso, de Chirico and Dalí. On view from May 2 to Aug. 29, 2021, the exhibition, curated by Beatrice Avanzi and Victoria Noel-Johnson, is an unprecedented and in-depth study of the way Raphael Sanzio ’s art influenced the three celebrated twentieth-century artists.

Although independently, Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico and Salvador Dalí were inspired by the lessons of the Urbino painter whose work they studied, quoted and interpreted throughout their careers.

De Chirico openly declared his admiration for Raphael, considering him a reference for the elaboration of metaphysical poetics and for the subsequent classicist season; Dalí, too, made no secret of his regard for the master, a myth he looked to from his youthful years and which, after World War II, suggested extraordinary reworkings to him. Picasso, on the other hand, never confessed his direct encounter with Raphael’s work, but the Urbino artist’s art appears to be at the origin of some of Picasso’s masterpieces and in particular inspired him to create a series of etchings on the theme of Raphael and the Fornarina.

The exhibition is divided into eight thematic sections, three of which aim to explore the relationship of each artist with the art of the great Renaissance painter: cultured and systematic for de Chirico, more immediate and irreverent in Picasso, animated by deep admiration that of Dalí.

On the occasion of Picasso, de Chirico and Dalí. Dialogue with Raphael one hundred masterpieces from some of the world’s leading museums, such as the Uffizi Galleries, the Musée National Picasso in Paris and the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí in Figueres, are on display. An exhibition itinerary that combines ancient and modern and places them in close dialogue.
