Robert Doisneau's photographs on display in Cava de' Tirreni

In Cava de' Tirreni (Salerno) from December 1, 2018 to March 3, 2019 comes the exhibition 'Fisherman of Images,' photographs by Robert Doisneau.

From Dec. 1, 2018 to March 3, 2019, the Complesso monumentale di San Giovanni Battista al Borgo in Cava de’ Tirreni(Salerno, Italy) will host the exhibition Pescatore d’immagini featuring the photographs of Robert Doisneau (Gentilly, 1912 - Montrouge, 1994), one of the most important and celebrated photographers of the 20th century.

The exhibition, curated by theAtelier Robert Doisneau(Francine Deroudille and Annette Doisneau) in collaboration with Piero Pozzi, under the patronage of the Municipality of Cava de’ Tirreni, produced and realized by Di Chroma Photography and ViDi - Visit Different, after its success in several cities in Italy therefore lands in Campania and presents 70 black and white images that trace the creative universe of the French photographer. The exhibition, which showcases some of the most recognizable icons of his career such as Le Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville, Les pains de Picasso, Prévert au guéridon, opens with theself-portrait from 1949 and traces Doisneau’s most cherished subjects, taking the visitor on a stroll through the gardens of Paris, along the Seine, through the streets of the center and suburbs, through the bistros and art galleries of the French capital.
The favorite subjects of his photographs are, in fact, Parisians: women, men, children, lovers, animals and their way of experiencing this timeless city.

What Doisneau has handed down to posterity is the image of the truest Paris, now vanished and fixed only in the collective imagination; it is that of the bistros, the clochards, the ancient professions; that of the markets of Les Halles, the existentialist cafes of Saint Germain des Prés, a meeting point for intellectuals, artists, musicians, actors, poets, such as Jacques Prévert with whom he shared, until his death, a fraternal friendship and present here with a shot(Prévert au guéridon) showing him seated at a cafe table with his faithful dog and even more faithful cigarette.

As Doisneau himself had occasion to recall, “The wonders of everyday life are so exciting; no filmmaker can recreate the unexpected found in the streets.”
