WIZARD Gallery in Milan presents The Last Supper - Visions of Eternal Return, an exhibition by American artist Terry Rodgers (New Jersey, 1947), on view from Sept. 11 to Nov. 3, 2024. The artist is known for his monumental works that touch on critical themes of contemporary society, realized in hyperrealist tones and sometimes extreme content. Rodgers’ work began in the 1960s with photography with a cinematic flavor, then shifted to painting, focusing on compositions devoted to the human figure.
His paintings are a collage of people actually photographed by the artist and used as reference for highly populated works. Evident in these works is the disconnect between desire, imagination and reality, the confusion and uncertainty that permeate contemporary society. Through his works, Rodgers investigates the complexity of the world we live in, from depravity to bliss, touching on themes such as loneliness, overabundance, individualism, desire and lust.
On the occasion of the exhibition, Terry Rodgers also presents his interpretation of The Last Supper. In the work, although the subjects are represented in a group, they do not look at each other: their gazes are lost in a void of loneliness. In the background, the depicted landscape is more vigorous and bucolic than that of the original masterpiece; moreover, the artist adds a dog, a new element to his practice. The works on display are accompanied by two video installations, dating from 2010, that offer a glimpse into the early visual explorations and experiments that helped shape Terry Rodgers’ artistic language. A limited edition of 10 prints of The Last Supper - Visions of Eternal Return, numbered and signed by the author, is available for the occasion.
